Edward Weston, Grass Against, Sea 1937

Jeff Wall, Outburst, 1989

Edward Steichen, The Flatiron, 1905

I’m doing a presentation soon on ‘documentary photography’ and so far this is my train of thought on it. The last photograph might not seem like it fits in as it is pictorialist, or more like a painting than a photograph in its manipulation of the image. My idea, however, in putting it with the other two was as a contrast to a modernist photograph (Weston) and something contemporary (Wall) and yet still relative to the documentary aspect of photography, even if only in its disregard for it.
